The Shifting Landscape

Europe's rapid coal phase-out has permanently closed major traditional export markets. However, this has been more than offset by surging Asian demand, and Indonesia has repositioned itself as the dominant supplier to South and Southeast Asian markets.

New Market Realities

India as the Critical Growth Market: India overtook China as the world's largest coal importer in 2023. Indonesia supplies approximately 48% of India's thermal coal imports, a share CDE expects to grow as high-CV Indonesian coal is preferred by India's super-critical power fleet.

Caloric Shift: As more efficient power plants come online across Asia, demand is shifting toward higher calorific value coal (6,000+ kcal/kg GAR). Low-CV producers are increasingly squeezed, while high-CV producers command growing premiums.

Policy Risk in China: China's domestic coal policy creates significant volatility. Indonesian exporters must build diversified customer portfolios across India, Bangladesh, Vietnam, and Japan.

Adapting the Business Model

Forward-thinking coal companies are exploring adjacent business lines — carbon credit generation from mine reclamation, coal-to-methanol projects, and compressed natural gas from coal seam methane — to hedge against long-term structural demand decline.
